During the last year, the Romanian pharmaceutical market picked up speed and the pharmaceutical market was worth €2.4 Billion. That means a 6.4% value increase compared to 2010. During 2004-2011, there was a twofold increase in sales of drugs. However, according to representatives of pharmaceutical companies that increase is artificial. They argue, it is mainly generated by parallel exports, i.e. buying low priced Romanian drugs and resell them in countries where prices are higher.
Throughout the review, Romanian brand names in will be used, International Nonproprietary Names (INN) and active ingredients will be given in the table below. According to IMS health, a research company, Algocalmin (painkiller) is the best selling drug in Romania. During January and September 2011, 9 Million boxes of Algocalmin were sold. The drug is produced by Zentiva, a Sanofi subsidiary. The second best selling drug was Nurofen, with 7.2 Million boxes (Reckitt Benckiser) followed by Paracetamol (multiple manufacturers), with 6.2 Million boxes.
The following positions are: Parasinus (5.2 Million boxes), Aspenter (5 Million boxes), Aspirin (4.9 Million boxes), Enap (3.7 Million boxes), Anti-neuralgic drugs (3.4 Million boxes), Metoprolol LPH (3.2 Million boxes) and Indapamide LPH (3.2 Million boxes).
Sales value ranking differs
In terms of sales value, the ranking of drugs shows a different picture. However, Nurofen made its way into both rankings. Total sales (2011) for Nurofen amounted to €22.4 Million and yielding a place 5 in the top-ten. The International Nonproprietary Names (INN) will be used when possible.
The ranking is led by Seretide (asthma), followed by MabThera (leukemia) and Pegasys (hepatitis). Seretide, which is produced by GlaxoSmithKline, had sales of €31 Million, up by 19.5% compared to 2010. MabThera, produced by the Swiss drug-maker Roche, ranks second with sales worth €27.4 Million, up by 9.3% compared with 2010. Third place is held by Pegasys (Roche) with sales worth some €27.3 Million, down 18.5% from 2010. However this year has proven hard for NeoRecormon (Roche) with sales worth €21.7 Million and only ranking sixth while occuping the first position in former years. The following positions are filled by Crestor (€24.9 Million), Nurofen (€22.4 Million), Avastin (€18.3 Million), Enbrel (€18.2 Million), Remicade (€17.9 Million), Glivec (€16.3 Million).
Most valuable Romanian Pharmaceutical companies
According to the ZF Year book of most valuable companies in Romanies, Terapia Ranbaxy is the most valuable Romanian pharma company. It is value at €205 Million euros and the company’s value increased by 34% in comparison to last year. It is also the most profitable producer of drugs in Romania. Mediplus, a pharmaceutical distributor, is the second most valuable company in Romania with an estimated value of €119 Million. It’s Mediplus, an A&D Pharma subsidiary, first time to be ranked in the top 5. It is followed by another distributor; Farmexpert. The company is valued €110 Million and also made it into the top 5 for the first time . The private health care provider MedLife is one of the strongest provider in the private health care sector and is valued at €72 Million. Polisano, another distribution company, is estimated at €62.2 Million.
